About Family Therapy

Families are complicated. They’re also worth showing up for, even when the dynamics feel impossible, the conversations keep going sideways, or everyone has retreated to their corners. Family therapy at Morningside Counseling exists for exactly that moment.

Rather than focusing on one person’s behavior as the “problem,” family therapy looks at the whole picture: the communication patterns, the old dynamics that keep replaying, and the ways people in the same household can feel completely alone. Our therapists work with families across Salt Lake City, Holladay, and Millcreek on conflict, parenting challenges, blended family adjustment, life transitions, and the long shadow that trauma can cast across a household.

What makes Morningside’s approach distinct is the trauma-informed lens we bring to every session. A teenager who shuts down, a parent who escalates, a partner who goes cold, these aren’t just “bad behaviors.” They’re often nervous system responses to earlier pain. When families start to understand that about each other, something shifts. We help create the conditions for that shift.

Whether your family is in genuine crisis or you’re trying to get ahead of patterns before they deepen, we’re here for both.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of issues does family therapy actually help with?

The range is wide: recurring arguments that never fully resolve, parent-child conflict, sibling tension, blended family stress, grief that’s affecting the whole household, and big life transitions like divorce, moves, or illness. Family therapy is also particularly valuable when one family member is struggling with mental health or addiction because those situations affect everyone, not just the individual. Treating the system, not just one person, tends to produce more lasting change.

Does everyone have to come to every session?

No. The configuration of sessions depends on what you’re working toward. Some sessions include the whole family; others might focus on two parents, or a parent and teen, or even an individual family member. We’ll figure out the right structure during your initial consultation and adjust it as the work evolves.

Our family has been through something really hard. Is it too late to try this?

It’s not too late. Many families who reach out to us have already tried other things that didn’t stick, and the fact that they’re still reaching out says something real about what they want for each other. Family therapy doesn’t require perfect timing or perfect readiness. It just requires some willingness, and we can work with that.

How is family therapy different from individual therapy?

Individual therapy focuses on one person’s inner world, their history, and their patterns. Family therapy focuses on the space between people. The goal is to understand how the family system works and to change the dynamics that keep everyone stuck. Both have real value, and they often complement each other well. Some family members choose to continue individual therapy alongside the family work.

How do I know if Morningside is the right fit for us?

A free consultation is the best way to find out. You can share what’s going on, ask questions, and get a real sense of our approach before committing to anything. Our therapists in Salt Lake City, Holladay, and Millcreek are trained in trauma-informed family therapy, and we take the time to understand your family before we start working on it.
