Individual Therapy

About Individual Therapy

Individual therapy is a dedicated space that belongs entirely to you. No managing how the other person hears it. No translating. No bracing for a reaction. Just you, a therapist, and the work of figuring out what’s actually going on and how to work on it.

At Morningside Counseling, individual therapy is shaped around you: your history, your challenges, and what you hope your life will look like on the other side of this. Our therapists draw on a multitude of therapeutic approaches that fit what you’re carrying, not the other way around. We work with people dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship patterns, major life changes, and the kind of ongoing low-grade struggle that doesn’t have a clean name but is still very real.

Our practice in Salt Lake City, Holladay, and Millcreek is built around clinical quality and relational safety. That second part matters more than people expect. The research on what actually makes therapy effective consistently points back to the relationship: whether clients feel safe, seen, and genuinely understood. We take that seriously.

You don’t need a crisis to start. A lot of the people we work with come in not because things have fallen apart, but because they’ve been carrying something for a while and they’re ready to look at it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens in a first session?

Mostly, your therapist gets to know you. They’ll ask about your history, what’s brought you in, and what you’re hoping for from therapy. There’s no pressure to have the right answers or share everything at once — it’s a conversation, not an intake form. A lot of people leave their first session surprised by how much lighter they feel just from being heard without judgment.

How often do I need to come?

Most people start with weekly sessions. It builds momentum, and it gives you and your therapist the continuity to do real work together. Over time, as things shift, some clients move to every other week or monthly. We’ll check in about what makes sense for your goals and your schedule as we go.

What if I don’t really know what I want to work on?

That’s fine, and it’s more common than you’d think. Some people come in knowing they feel stuck but not understanding why. Figuring out the actual shape of the problem is often the first thing therapy does. You don’t need a prepared agenda. You just need to show up.

Do you offer virtual sessions?

Yes. We offer telehealth for clients across Utah so you can receive individual therapy from home, in your car, or wherever you have a private moment. For most people and most issues, virtual therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy and significantly easier to fit into real life.

I’ve tried therapy before, and it didn’t help. What would be different?

It’s a fair thing to bring up. Therapy is not one-size-fits-all, and not every therapist is the right fit for every person. At Morningside, we use evidence-based EMDR, Mind Body Bridging, values-based ACT therapy, and DBT alongside trauma-informed approaches, which go meaningfully further than standard talk therapy for a lot of people. We also want to understand what didn’t work before; that information helps us design an individualized plan for our clients.
