About Relationship Therapy

Most couples don’t come to therapy because they stopped caring. They come because they care and can’t figure out why the same fights keep happening, why the distance keeps growing, or why the person they chose feels increasingly hard to reach.

Relationship therapy at Morningside Counseling offers a space to slow that cycle down. Our therapists work with couples and partners in Salt Lake City, Holladay, and Millcreek to understand the patterns between them, not just the surface arguments, but what’s driving them. Often, what looks like a communication problem has roots in attachment history, past experiences, or the ways each person’s nervous system responds under stress. Understanding multiple factors changes the conversation.

We work with couples of all backgrounds, orientations, and relationship structures. Our approach is non-judgmental by design; we’re not there to decide who’s right. We’re there to help both people feel heard, to identify what’s keeping the relationship stuck, and to give you tools that actually work outside the therapy room.

Couples therapy doesn’t require a crisis. Some of the most productive relationship work happens early, when patterns are just starting to calcify rather than after years of buildup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does our relationship have to be in crisis to start?

No. That’s one of the most common misconceptions about couples therapy. Some of the most productive work happens when couples come in early when they notice a pattern, a drift, or a recurring argument they can’t get out of, but before it’s done serious damage. You don’t have to wait until things break.

What if my partner is hesitant?

Very common. Sometimes it helps to reframe therapy as a space for both of you, not a venue for one person to present their case against the other. If your partner is skeptical, you’re also welcome to start with an individual session to figure out how you want to approach the conversation. We can help you think through it.

Can therapy actually save a marriage — or is it just for figuring out whether to leave?

Both things happen, and a good therapist supports you regardless of where things go. Many couples come in feeling like strangers and leave with something genuinely different between them. Others come in needing support through a separation they’ve already decided on. We’re not invested in either outcome; we’re invested in helping you both move forward with more clarity.

Do you work with same-sex couples and non-traditional relationship structures?

Yes, without reservation. Our practice is affirming and inclusive. We work with couples of all orientations, gender identities, and relationship structures, and we don’t require anyone to explain or justify who they are before the real work can start.

How long does it take?

Depends on what you’re working through. Some couples find real movement in 8–12 sessions. Others, especially where there’s been a significant breach of trust or long-standing patterns, choose to work together longer. We’ll be straightforward with you about what seems realistic based on what you share in the early sessions.
