PTSD Treatment

About PTSD Treatment

PTSD isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s what happens when the nervous system encounters something too large to fully process and then stays on alert, waiting for it to happen again.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can develop after a single overwhelming event or after prolonged exposure to difficult circumstances. It shows up differently in different people: flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, avoidance of anything connected to what happened, and an inability to feel safe even in situations that are objectively fine. What these symptoms share is that they’re the nervous system doing its job — just stuck on a setting that’s no longer useful.

At Morningside Counseling, PTSD treatment is one of our primary areas of focus. Our therapists in Salt Lake City, Holladay, and Millcreek are trained in EMDR, one of the most extensively researched and effective treatments available for PTSD. We also bring trauma-informed principles to every aspect of the work, which means we never push faster than the nervous system can safely go.

Recovery from PTSD is real, and it happens regularly. It doesn’t require reliving everything in vivid detail. It doesn’t require years of preparation. It does require the right approach and a therapist who knows how to work with where you are, not just where the textbook says you should be.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if what I’m experiencing is PTSD or just normal stress?

The key differences are persistence and intrusion. Stress typically eases when the stressor eases. PTSD doesn’t, and it often intensifies over time without treatment. Common signs: flashbacks or intrusive memories, nightmares, being easily startled or constantly on guard, avoiding things that remind you of what happened, emotional numbness or disconnection, and a persistent sense of not being safe even when you logically know you are. If that sounds familiar, it’s worth talking to someone, not because the label matters, but because what you’re experiencing is treatable.

Is EMDR actually proven to work for PTSD, or is it still experimental?

EMDR is one of the most well-researched trauma treatments available. It’s endorsed by the World Health Organization, the VA, the Department of Defense, and the American Psychological Association. The clinical trial evidence is consistent: EMDR produces significant symptom reduction for PTSD, and it often does so more efficiently than traditional talk therapy. For many clients, it’s the first approach that actually moves things.

I can’t think about what happened without shutting down completely. Can I still do this?

Yes, and shutting down is something your therapist will know how to work with, not push through. PTSD treatment doesn’t start with diving into the traumatic material. It starts with building capacity: helping the nervous system tolerate more, developing grounding and stabilization skills, and establishing safety in the therapeutic relationship. The deeper processing comes later, at a pace the nervous system can actually handle. You stay in the driver’s seat throughout.

It’s been years since what happened. Is it too late?

No. The brain’s capacity to process and heal isn’t limited by time. PTSD that has been present for years or decades still responds to treatment. Some of the most significant recoveries we see in this practice come from clients who spent years managing alone before finally reaching out. It’s not too late.

What’s the difference between PTSD and complex PTSD (C-PTSD)?

PTSD typically develops from one or a small number of discrete traumatic events. Complex PTSD develops from prolonged or repeated trauma, often childhood abuse, neglect, domestic violence, or other sustained difficult experiences. C-PTSD involves everything PTSD does, plus additional features like difficulty with emotional regulation, self-perception, and relationships. Treatment is similar but requires some additional nuance, particularly around pacing and building capacity first. Our therapists work with both.
